Inaki Alberdi

Iñaki Alberdi (Spain) studied with Friedrich Lipps at the National Russian Academy of Music (Moscow, Russia) and with Matti Rantanen at the Sibelius Academy (Helsinki, Finland).

He won first prize at the Coupe Mondiale (Colmar, 1994), at the Permanent Competition of the Musical Youth (Valladolid, 1996) and became the only Western accordionist to have won first prize at the International Competition for Accordionists and Bajanists (Moscow, 1995).

In 2012 he was nominated for the Gramophone Editor's Choice Award for his CD dedicated to Sofia Gubaidulina, with the Basque Country Symphony Orchestra and Assier Polo, conducted by José Ramón Encinar. He has recorded for the Stradivarius, Kairos, Verso, Et'Cetera record labels and the record label of the National Orchestra of Spain.

He is currently a professor at the Higher Centre of Music of the Basque Country - Musikene and teaches courses at some of the most prestigious international centres such as the Royal Academy of Music (London), Royal Danish Academy of Music (Copenhagen), Sibelius Academy (Helsinki), FHNW Music Academy (Basel) and Folkwang University of the Arts (Essen). Teaching is his passion. In this regard, he created the digital platform Iñaki Alberdi Virtual Academy to train and connect accordionists from all over the world.

Alberdi has given many concerts and participated in festivals such as La Fenice Theatre, Musikverein (Vienna), Arsenale (Metz), National Audiatorium (Madrid), San Sebastian Music Fortnight, Duke's Hall (London), Hermitage (St. Petersburg), Ostertone Festival (Hamburg), Cairo Opera House, Warsaw Autumn Festival, St Petersburg Philharmonic, Stuttgart Staatsoper, Granada Music and Dance Festival, Venice Biennale - Goldoni Theatre, L'Auditori in Barcelona, Mostly Modern Series in Dublin, Colón Theatre in Buenos Aires and Solis Theatre in Montevideo.

One of Iñaki Alberdi's abiding passions as an accordionist is to perform repertoire that incorporates the accordion into the world of academic concerts. From the beginning of his career, he has therefore considered collaborations with contemporary composers essential to expanding this repertoire, which is the best legacy, for future generations of accordionists.

Through the possibilities of transcription, he able to extend the range of the instrument even further and thus composers such as Thomas Louis de Victoria, J. С. Bach, Antonio Soler, Isaac Albéniz or Alberto Hinaster pass through the emotional and enveloping presence of the instrument.

His entire repertoire as a performer, from the Renaissance to the 21st century, represents a new perspective on classical music that dialogues between the popular and the avant-garde and becomes the sound of our time for classical music.

He collaborates closely with various contemporary composers and premieres works by Sofia Gubaidulina, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luis de Pablo, Joan Guinjoan, Gabriel Ercoreca, Ramon Lascano, Jesus Torres, Alberto Posadas, and José María Sánchez-Verdu.

As a soloist, Iñaki Alberdi is regularly invited by orchestras such as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Tampere Chamber Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Spain, the Orchestra of Granada, the RTBE Orchestra, the Philharmonia of Galicia, and the Community Orchestra of Madrid, the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, the National Chamber Orchestra of Andorra, the Symphony Orchestra of Magnitogorsk, the Malaga Philharmonic, the Montevideo Philharmonic, the Basque Country Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Ministry of Culture of Russia, among others.
